GTA 6 Preload Starts November 10: Times, the 212 GB Download and How to Make Room

GTA VI’s digital preload opens November 10 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Here are the start times, what 212 GB means on each console, how long it takes to download and how to free up space.

Grand Theft Auto VI needs up to 212 GB of free space. On an original PS5, that’s about a third of the usable storage. On a 512 GB Xbox Series S, it’s more than half. Rockstar has moved the digital preload forward by two days, to November 10, so if your console is nearly full, this is the week to sort it out.

When the preload starts

  • PS5: November 10 at midnight, your local time.
  • Xbox Series X|S: November 10 at 12:00 a.m. GMT, worldwide. In the US that’s the evening before: 7 p.m. ET or 4 p.m. PT on November 9.
  • Boxed copies: on sale at retailers from November 12. They contain a download code, not a disc, so you can preload once you’ve redeemed it.
  • Launch: November 19. The game unlocks at midnight local time, so New Zealand gets it first, around midday on November 18 in Europe.

Preloading doesn’t unlock the game early. It just means the download is done when it does unlock. Rockstar hasn’t said anything about a day-one patch, so it’s possible you’ll have a little more to download on November 19.

What 212 GB means on your console

A console’s advertised storage isn’t what you can actually use: the system software takes a big slice first. Here’s how much of the usable space GTA VI will take:

ConsoleAdvertisedUsableGTA VI takes
Xbox Series S512 GB364 GB58%
PS5 (original)825 GB667 GB32%
Xbox Series X1 TB802 GB26%
212 GB is Rockstar’s “up to” figure. Rockstar says the exact size varies by device, and it hasn’t published separate figures for each console.

The Series S is the console to worry about. After GTA VI, there’s room for about one other large game. Owners of the original 825 GB PS5 are in a similar position if they keep a few 100 GB games like Call of Duty installed.

The download itself also takes a while. At full speed, 212 GB takes:

ConnectionTime to download 212 GB
50 MbpsAbout 9.5 hours
100 MbpsAbout 4.7 hours
300 MbpsAbout 1.6 hours
1 GbpsAbout 30 minutes
Our calculation, assuming the connection runs at its full rated speed for the whole download.

Those are best cases. With millions of people downloading the same game in the same few days, I wouldn’t count on PlayStation’s and Xbox’s servers delivering full speed on November 10. Start early, and leave the console in rest mode overnight.

How to make room without losing your other games

Move games, don’t delete them. Both consoles let you move current-generation games to a USB hard drive or SSD for storage. You can’t play them from there, but moving one back is much faster than downloading it again. A cheap external drive is enough for this, since speed doesn’t matter much for storage.

Expanding storage on a PS5 means fitting an M.2 NVMe SSD in the expansion slot. Sony asks for a PCIe 4.0 drive and recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster, with a heatsink. It takes about 15 minutes and a screwdriver. SSD prices have climbed a lot during the 2026 memory shortage. We found 1 TB PCIe 4.0 drives at around $145–165 for our budget PC build, and that’s the right size to look at. PS5-ready models with a heatsink fitted cost a little more. Our PS5 SSD guide compares the drives worth buying.

On an Xbox Series X|S, the only way to add storage you can play Series games from is an official expansion card from Seagate or Western Digital, which plugs into the back. They’ve always cost more than an equivalent M.2 drive. If you’re short on space only for GTA VI, moving other games to a USB drive is the cheaper fix.

There’s no disc, even in the box

Rockstar isn’t producing a disc version. Boxed copies hold a download code, so a “physical” copy saves you nothing on download time or storage, and you can’t lend it to a friend or sell it on afterwards. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99 either way. If you don’t care about a box on the shelf, there’s little reason to buy one over a digital pre-order, especially as the digital version preloads two days earlier.

And PC?

Still nothing. GTA VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version or a date for one. If Rockstar follows the pattern of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, a PC version will come later. We’ve collected what’s known so far, and what we’d expect the requirements to look like, in our GTA 6 PC system requirements article.
