iPhone Duo screens are cracking at the hinge: what we know and what to do

Some owners of Apple’s first foldable report inner displays breaking along the fold days after launch. Apple has acknowledged the issue and is replacing affected units.

Apple’s first foldable phone has been on sale for less than a week, and some owners are already reporting the problem every foldable buyer fears: a cracked inner screen. The iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23 starting at $1,999, and within hours photos began appearing on Reddit and the MacRumors forums of displays broken along the hinge.

Apple has acknowledged the issue and is replacing affected phones, but it hasn’t said what is causing it. Here’s what we know so far, and what to do if it happens to yours.

What owners are reporting

The reports have a lot in common. The damage sits on the 7.6-inch inner display, right along the fold, and usually shows up as a crack or a bright white line of pixels running from roughly the same point near the middle of the hinge.

The most widely shared case comes from an owner in Australia who had the phone for about six hours and had opened it fewer than 20 times. While unfolding it, they felt something give near the hinge, heard a crack, and the screen broke along the fold, with no drops or marks beforehand. Apple replaced the phone on the spot.

It’s important to keep the numbers in perspective. When 9to5Mac reported on the issue, it had seen around ten unique cases, and some images circulating online turned out to be fake. Several cracked units are store demo models in China, where the history of each device is unknown. Reviewers who tested early units haven’t reported the problem, although that is a small sample.

What Apple says

In a statement shared with 9to5Mac on October 26, Apple confirmed the problem without explaining it:

“We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

Apple

According to Notebookcheck, you don’t need AppleCare+ to get this repair, and owners who bought through a carrier should contact AppleCare directly rather than the carrier. Apple hasn’t said how many units are affected, what the cause is, or whether it is changing anything in production.

What might be causing it

The best clues so far come from iFixit’s teardown. Comparing owner photos with its model of the hinge, iFixit found that the breaks cluster near the point where the gap for the display cable meets the hinge’s central support. That is a spot where several edges meet and the way the thin display is supported changes as it bends. It also suggested that a hinge part meant to retract might not be doing so, or that the curved hinge rails could lift as the phone closes.

iFixit is careful to call these possibilities, not answers: pressure, a trapped particle, repeated bending or a manufacturing defect could all play a part, and some “cracks” might not be physical breaks at all, but a connection problem that looks the same on screen.

Other tests point the same way. JerryRigEverything’s bend test left permanent green lines on the inner display, and in dust tests particles made their way into the hinge. On the other hand, endurance tests found the hinge itself held up after thousands of folds, although the crease became deeper with use.

Repairs won’t be easy either. iFixit gave the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, better than any foldable it has opened so far, but replacing the inner display and hinge “takes a lot of work.”

What to do if your iPhone Duo screen cracks

  1. Back up the phone with iCloud or a computer before you hand it over.
  2. Take photos of the damage and note when it happened.
  3. Contact AppleCare by phone, chat or the Apple Support app, or visit an Apple Store. Apple says affected displays will be replaced, and you don’t need AppleCare+. If you bought from a carrier, still go to Apple.
  4. Consider a return instead. If you’re still inside Apple’s two-week return window and would rather wait for a later production run, returning the phone is an option.
  5. Don’t try to repair it yourself and don’t take it to a third-party shop while Apple is replacing these units free of charge.

Should you buy an iPhone Duo now?

Based on what’s known today, the problem looks real but rare, and Apple is standing behind affected phones. If you already have one, there’s no reason to panic: use it normally and keep the return window in mind. If you’re still deciding, waiting a few weeks costs you little. Manufacturers have fixed early foldable problems in later production runs before, and by then it should be clearer whether this is a small batch issue or something in the design. The iPhone Duo reaches 28 more countries on October 30, so the number of reports, or the lack of them, will tell us a lot soon.

We’ll update this article as Apple or repair experts share more.
